Why We Do It
THERE ARE OVER 170,000 UNWANTED HORSES EVERY YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES.
Currently there are an estimated 6,000 unwanted horses in Colorado alone and over 170,000 nationally. Of these, 120,000-130,000 horses are shipped to slaughter in Mexico and Canada every year, where they are processed for human consumption. SOME ESTIMATES INDICATE THAT AS OF 2015 THERE ARE OVER 1 MILLION UNWANTED HORSES IN THE UNITED STATES!
In addition, each year the BLM rounds up 9,400 wild horses off of public lands, BUT ONLY 1 IN 3 FIND HOMES. Today there are 47,000 horses in the “holding system”. That means there are more wild horses living in captivity than in the wild!
Unlike dog and cat rescue organizations, horse rescues do not receive any federal funding. It costs up to $6,000 per year for the basic care of one horse. That doesn’t include luxuries like winter blankets or training. We are a non profit organization and every dollar we generate comes from caring people like you.
Getting involved today helps us alleviate this huge national problem of unwanted horses.
