Current Horses

Current horses at MVHR are in various stages of the recovery process, with the ultimate goal for all being adoption into loving homes of their own. Adoption fees for those nearing “ready” for adoption are listed within their descriptions.

For those horses whose age or health issues make it less likely that they will find an adoptive homes, MVHR offers the security of one of our limited sanctuary opportunities at the MVHR ranch. Although adoption fees are not listed for these horses, they may still be available for adoption to just the right home, willing to take on the rewarding care of a special needs horse.

In order to provide platinum level care for each and every member of the herd, whether they are just beginning their recovery journey, or are likely to spend the rest of their lives with us, MVHR seeks sponsors for each horse in our care. Sponsors help cover the annual expense of caring for your special horse, and sponsorships can be partial (every penny helps!), or a full annual underwriting at our Equine Advocate level of giving. This is a great way to make a meaningful difference in the life of a horse, even if you’re not quite ready to take one home!

BROWNIE

Brownie came to MVHR severely emaciated when his previous owner had been no longer able to care for him for a time. After gradual refeeding, Brownie’s personality has started to show, and what a character! This funny old man loves people and attention, and lets you know what HIS idea of fun will be. Brownie is currently being treated for Cushings so that he can complete his recovery, and we are also restarting him under saddle! Supposedly a children’s trail horse for much of his life, he so far has been a great little guy to ride, and we look forward to continuing to get to know him!

Adoption fee $500

RACEY

Along with Stormy, this sweet miniature horse came to MVHR in hopes of recovery from a lifetime of hoof neglect. Thanks to the diligent attention of farrier Gary Hoza, little Racey has defied all who thought she perhaps should just be put down. Her feet look great, and she loves nothing more than the occasional gallop across the pasture! It's hard to imagine now that she could barely walk when she first came to us.

Racey is hoping for a sponsor, so she can stay on at MVHR with Stormy and Sparky as an ambassador for MVHR. She especially loves meeting the littlest kids that come to visit, and she's getting great at ground driving, with hopes of someday pulling a cart or sleigh!

SALLY Sally is a Mustang adopted from the BLM in 2006 as a yearling. She grew up locally, but family issues left her without diligent care. Her feet in particular were neglected, and when she came to MVHR she was severely lame due to the condition of her hooves as well as ringbone and other issues in her lower legs. After being with MVHR for just a few weeks, and having a few feet trims, Sally is already moving MUCH better, enjoying time trotting around in the pasture and getting to know other horses in the MVHR herd. Sally is currently working under saddle, learning about being a riding horse, and would make a fun light riding project for a handler/rider with some experience. Adoption fee $500.

SPARKY

This little cutie came to MVHR desperately in need of hoof care. Just 3 years old, it is likely he had never had his feet trimmed – and they looked like elf slippers (or bananas as one child said). Barely able to walk, MVHR rushed to get Dr. Silvia Stocker and farrier Gary Hoza to come help. And help they did – with sedation so Sparky could rest comfortably throughout the procedure, Gary’s steady hand used power tools to remove nearly 8 inches of growth from each of Sparky’s feet. Gary and Dr. Stocker then fashioned splints for Sparky’s back feet, to help him stand upright while his tendons and ligaments contracted back to normal after being stretched out for so long. With in a week, Sparky was comfortable and up and about, and the splints were removed. Four weeks (and one gelding surgery later) and the little guy is now seen running and bucking in his pen. The gentlest of souls, Sparky has stepped right into a roll of ambassador for MVHR, thanks to the sponsorship of a local youngster.

WILLOW

This beautiful Quarter Horse mare was one of the original rescues made by MVHR way back in 2004! Found abandoned in the Flat Tops Wilderness, she brought together a group of local horse enthusiasts to help her, and within months MVHR was officially formed. Willow enjoyed 12 years with a local adoptive home, with a family and little ranch of her own. When health reasons dictated that the family leave the state, they feared asking Willow to make such a huge transition at age 26 would be too much. Instead, they asked if she could return to MVHR to live out her life. And what a time for her to return! Willow came back to MVHR at our new forever home, something only a far off dream those many years ago when Willow was rescued. Willow now participates in programs, and loves grooming and round pen sessions with people of all ages. Welcome Home Willow!

CHANEL

Chanel is one of our four mustangs rescued from Lantry South Dakota. Chanel received a great foundation to her training, first with Mitch Harris in Whitewater, and now continuing with Joel Aguilar here at the MVHR facility. She has proven to have a sweet, friendly personality now that she knows people are kind! She will make a lovely horse for someone with some experience to continue her training.

Adoption fee $1000.

Chanel is underwritten (but still available for adoption) with generous support from Alexandra Mastriana.

CEKKA

Cekka is one of our four mustangs rescued from Lantry South Dakota.

With the support of a number of generous donors who helped sponsor the transportation, MVHR was able to offer space to four of the mustangs from South Dakota. After quite a journey through snow storms and icy roads to get here, the four beautiful mares arrived December 9, 2016.

From the start, Cekka was the most curious and interactive of the mares, and continues to love to have her rear end scratched by anyone who will oblige. She has a great foundation to her training, thanks to Mitch Harris of Harris Ranch in Whitewater, and now continuing with Joel Aguilar at the MVHR facility. She even spent the fall in elk camp in 2018! She will be an amazing partner when she decides the right person has come along!

Adoption fee $1000.

Cekka is underwritten (but still available for adoption) with generous support from Alexandra Mastriana.

ROMAN

Roman is handsome FULL of personality! He spent the first 13 years of his life as a stud horse with very little handling. During the training process MVHR discovered that he suffers from spinal stenosis, making riding impossible for him. BUT….He loves people and attention so he is currently the “official greeter” stalled where everyone who pulls in MUST say hello to him. He has all the attention he wants, but still needs a sponsor! Are you that special person? Come meet Roman and find out!

LATIGO

Latigo came to MVHR from a local outfitter, after a back injury made him unable to work for a living. Latigo currently receives weekly “physical therapy” with Alexz Adams, and monthly acupuncture from Dr. Silvia Stocker in an effort to help with his neurological deficits. And best of all, regular visits and love from his sponsor and friend Mary.

Latigo is underwritten with generous support from Mary Wolf.

ROXY

Roxy came to MVHR when she was abandoned by her owner at a local boarding facility. A 20-something year old Arabian mare, she is sweet and gentle to be around, and lovely to work with under saddle. She would be a wonderful light riding horse for a small adult or child!

Adoption fee $500.

STORMY

This sweet miniature horse came to MVHR in hopes of recovery from a lifetime of hoof neglect. With long, curling hooves, watching him stand and walk was painful. With diligent attention and the expert help of Dr. Silvia Stocker and farrier Gary Hoza , Stormy has been returned to near perfect condition!

Stormy is hoping for a sponsor, so that he can stay with Racey and Sparky as an ambassador for MVHR. He especially loves meeting the little kids that come to visit! He is also learning to drive, in hopes of pulling a little cart someday!

SINCLAIR

Sinclair came to MVHR from Barbara Wright at Harmony Horse Works, who will partially sponsor his ongoing care. After rescuing and rehabilitating horses for over 15 years, Barbara has retired and entrusted her sweet therapy horses to our care. At 43 years old, Sinclair is our oldest resident and has a lifetime of experience (and personality!) to bring to everyone he meets. We look forward to providing him a permanent home, and to his participation in our education, outreach, and therapy programs!

JACKIE

MVHR bought Jackie at auction in May 2014 to keep her from slaughter. Emaciated and with only one eye, she was the poster child for rescue. In spite of her own terrible condition, Jackie was a steadfast friend to her corral mate Rosie, who was emaciated and also terrified. Turns out Rosie was pregnant, and gave birth to a colt just weeks after being kept from slaughter. Jackie was the good Auntie throughout her recovery, and helped raise little Indie, giving mama Rosie breaks from the little guy as needed. Jackie’s nurturing nature continues, and now that her nannying is over, she is helping with Programs here at MVHR!

Jackie is partially underwritten with generous support from Vail Valley Cares.

MADDIE

Maddie came from a neglect situation in Garfield County. While she had plenty to eat, their feet and training have been neglected for many years. 14 year old Maddie seems to have suffered from multiple founders in the past, and will require careful maintenance and management for the rest of her life. Energetic and responsive under saddle, she is a fun horse to ride, and would be a great match for a small adult or child with some riding experience.

Adoption fee $800

STARDUST

Stardust ("Star") is one of our four mustangs rescued from Lantry South Dakota, and mother to sweet Woodrow (though raising Woodrow takes a village, and the mustangs have all been taking shifts since he was born)! Stardust has been getting a solid foundation of ground and undersaddle work since Woodrow was weaned - first with Mitch Harris in Whitewater, and currently with Joel Aguilar here at the MVHR facility. She even helped pack out Joel’s elk this past fall! A special mare, who will be an amazing horse for a special person with the experience to continue her training.

Adoption fee $1000

Stardust is underwritten (but still available for adoption) with generous support from Alexandra Mastriana.

GABBY

This aged mule was bought at auction November, 2011 to keep her from the kill buyers. Due to her huge personality, she quickly found an adoptive home, but when her family’s situation changed in 2017, she returned to MVHR. Now nearing 30, Gabby enjoys her retirement and big grass pastures at MVHR!

BONITA

This beautiful Arabian mare is in her early 20s and has suffered a lifetime of neglect and abuse, including being used as a roping steer, and having her legs roped and pulled out from under her. Bonita is (understandably) very leery of strangers (especially those carrying ropes) and yet her youthful, sweet spirit remains. She seems to connect especially with young children, and anyone with quiet patience who will take the time to get to know her. Currently enjoying life with other senior members of the MVHR herd, Bonita is as fat, relaxed, and happy as we’ve ever seen her. She is missing just one thing: a sponsor! Everyone else in her corral has one, but she does not. Could you be the one she’s been hoping for?

GINGER

Ginger (formerly known as Annie) has found a wonderful sponsor, who loves and supports her every need. Ginger will spend her summers with her sponsor, and winters at MVHR. This beautiful teenage Quarter Horse mare came from county authorities, emaciated and with a young colt at her side (Buffalo). A doting mother who gave all she could to her baby, she has raised him into a beautiful young horse. She has navicular syndrome, which is well managed, and she loves to be lightly ridden and have a “job.” Her beautiful, sassy attitude is priceless!

Ginger is underwritten with generous support from Alexandra Mastriana.

MELODY

This young, pretty mare came to MVHR when her owner could no longer care for her. About 4 years old, she is currently in training, and her smart, athletic nature is moving her along quickly. She will be a special horse for a small adult or child with the experience to continue her learning.
