Current Horses

Current equines at MVHR are in various stages of the recovery.

The ultimate goal for all horses at MVHR is adoption into loving homes of their own. Adoption fees for horses are listed once MVHR has had opportunity to evaluate and get to know the horses after their intake. Those whom we are still in the process of getting to know, or who have an issue we are still helping them with have adoption fees listed as TBD, BUT they ARE still available for adoption to just the right home willing to take on the rewarding care of an equine still in its recovery process.

Please read through our Adoption Process and fill out our adoption interest form if you are interested in adopting! We will follow up to schedule a ranch visit so you can meet the horses in person!

In order to provide outstanding care for each and every member of the herd, whether they are just beginning their recovery journey, or are likely to spend the rest of their lives with us, MVHR seeks sponsors for each equine in our care. Sponsors help cover the annual expense of caring for your special equine, and sponsorships can be partial (every penny helps!), or a full annual underwriting at our Equine Advocate level of giving. This is a great way to make a meaningful difference in the life of an equine, even if you’re not quite ready to take one home! See someone you’d like to sponsor? DACI

Daci is a 16 year old, chestnut gelding, part Lusitano and one of the sweetest horses! He loves people but has not done much in some time due to people reasons at his previous homes. We have started to get him back in shape and reviewing the basics with extensive ground work and he has now started his under saddle training again. He presents green broke, willing to learn. He would make the best companion to any horse.

He is a gentle soul who loves cuddles but also likes his alone time. Larry does experience some body discomfort and at this time would be adoptable as a companion horse. We have started working on some PT and exercises to evaluate if he might be a light riding horse.

A handsome, well broke ranch horse is in his late teens. He has front end lameness issues which resulted in him no longer being ridden, however, he is pasture sound. He is lovely to be around and an amazing companion to other geldings.

BLUE

This gorgeous, almost 12 year old registered Tennessee Walking Horse gelding is stunning, and lovely to be around on the ground. This Blue Roan is stout and sturdy, and although he has not done much in some time, he is broke to ride and presents wonderfully under saddle. He is adoptable to an experienced handler and rider, who has the ability to restart him slowly, condition him and help him get back in shape. Given his popularity and the many inquiries we have received on him, please read this full description to ensure you are a good match for Blue!

Blue came to us with some benign neglect after his owner passed away. His front feet were very long, and he came with reports of historic founder. Our farrier, who specializes in rehab cases, saw him, took tons of foot (toe) off and made significant improvements for him. He saw relatively little stretching of the laminae and suspects primarily mechanical laminitis due to the hoof neglect, although we cannot rule out a more metabolic cause at this point, he certainly is the breed and has the body type for those issues.  He has been completely sound while he has been here, even before his feet were trimmed, and even through a taxing training session, so we are expecting a good prognosis for him at this time.

Blue is quickly affectionate, a little watchy and nervous under tack, but focuses on trying to do the right thing. Blue is a bit "rusty" and in need of a tune up, as it had been a while since he has was last ridden, but he has made huge strides even in minimal training sessions here at MVHR. He has been lovely to be around on the ground, catching and handling for turnouts, vet, farrier, etc. Some extensive x-rays of his lower limbs have been done, as well as fasting glucose and insulin tests.  None show concerning results especially given his soundness and overall health. Regardless, we would recommend he continued be managed as a metabolic horse (low sugar feeds, regular exercise, etc).

Please reach out if you are willing to provide this incredible horse with the opportunity for a restart!

Adoption Fee: $3800

LATIGO

This handsome guy loves people and attention, and he is gentle enough for even the most novice of handlers. He gets along well with every horse he meets too!  Due to a closed head injury years ago, and resulting neurologic deficits, he cannot be ridden, but he loves time in the round pen and thrives in a pasture life. He would make the perfect companion horse who is also fun to play with!

Latigo is part of our MVHR Program Herd and participates regularly in educational programs.

Latigo is underwritten with generous support from Mary Wolf (but still available for adoption!).

IN RECOVERY: TIMBER

This lovely 8 year old AQHA mare came to MVHR in need of long term recovery from a soft tissue injury and ulcers. With damage to a medial collateral ligament, Timber is currently on stall rest, and receiving small amounts of exercise, hand walking for 30 minutes a day. This exercise will gradually increase in coming months to help her rebuild strength and conditioning as her ligament heals. Her ulcers are likely a result of the stress of her injury and ensuing stall rest, so we are working hard to help her heal from those as well, and stay happy and healthy going forward. We are honored to be entrusted with her care, and look forward to giving this wonderful horse all she needs to make a full recovery and go on to whatever she would like next in life! Stay tuned to see how she’s doing!

UNDER EVALUATION: SHAWNEE

Shawnee is a sweet buckskin appaloosa who needed an immediate safe landing as she could not stay where she was any longer. She does present with an enlarged knee and what seems like other skeleton muscular discomforts which we hope to help her with. So far she is curious and friendly, and loves all the attention she can get. More on this beautiful girl soon!

Adoption Fee: TBD

We are helping her gain weight and then we’ll see what CJ might want to do in her next chapter in life!

Adoption Fee: TBD
