We were the first two Horses...
…who MVHR gave names to. We had been lost and scared in the wilderness, so our names come from mountains and valleys near where we were found. Us horses don’t worry much about names, but we do worry alot about other things, like food and water, and feeling safe with the people around us. MVHR gave us those things too. We got our names so long ago, that now MVHR has so many horse names! A big, big herd of names!
Some of the horses needed names when they came, like we did. Like Lucky, who really is lucky to have found MVHR. She was shy at first, but now is having fun with safe people while she waits for her own special person. And Rocky and Daisy who were kinda lost like us when MVHR found them, and who maybe had names before, but wanted new ones cause it was scary where they used to live, so they got new names and lots of food and love and kindness which they both really liked.
Then there’s Clementine and Ginger, and they are mustangs, so they really don’t understand names at all, but that’s okay, they kinda go along with having names, especially ‘cause they have pretty ones. Nowadays though, lots of the horses come with their own names. Like Gabe and Felix and Harley and Hammer, whose owners had loved them so much for so long they wanted to keep their names. Dolly definitely wanted to keep her name, cause she has even had her name on bright light-up signs when she used to run fast at rodeos. And Cheech, who has a really long name on a fancy piece of paper, but likes his funny name instead.
Sometimes there’s even names from before, like Star who MVHR had to call Little Star cause there had been other Stars before. Us horses really are like pretty twinkly things in the sky, so that makes sense. And there were even other Sunnys! One who came this year was big and black, so MVHR calls him Midnight Sun, which he seems to like when he comes out for his big bowl of grain every morning.
Sage and Waco and Buster and Rusty have ridden so many miles through the mountains with their names, they wanted to keep them and even took them to their new homes. And little Charcoal too, even though he couldn’t see too well, he still knew his name and it helped him find his mule friend Gus so they could go together to a pretty ranch to live at forever.
There’s some names that the people like to remember, even though those horses went away like we have to sometimes, when things are wrong that even love can’t fix. Like Carmel and Sonny and Dojo and even sweet Gabe. When that happens the people paint their names in pretty colors with flowers and put them up over where you can see the river. They visit the names and remember those horses, and are sad they are not here anymore. But they don’t need to be, cause we’re still here, up in the sky keeping an eye on everyone and letting the new horses know how much love is here at MVHR.
There’s lots of pictures that tell stories about lots of the horses and their names in the next few pages.
And we’re sure there are going to be lots more names to come, cause MVHR has so many people with so much love to give and there are still so many horses who need help when they are scared or alone or have to make a big change. We can’t wait to see what the new names and horses will be!
With whickers and shoulder nibbles of love and gratitude for all of you people who help us horses,
